Sung Jinwoo eventually becomes one of the most overwhelmingly powerful characters in Solo Leveling, but his rise to becoming the Shadow Monarch was anything but easy. Before he reached the point where most enemies could barely slow him down, Jinwoo had to survive opponents who pushed his abilities, exploited his weaknesses and, in some cases, came dangerously close to killing him.
That distinction is important when ranking the strongest villains Jinwoo faced. Raw power alone doesn’t tell the whole story. Some enemies were powerful but never truly threatened him, while others forced Jinwoo to adapt or survive under circumstances where one mistake could have ended everything.
From the recreated Baran in the Demon Castle to the terrifying Antares, these are the five villains who genuinely challenged Sung Jinwoo in Solo Leveling, ranked from fifth to first.
5. Baran Forced Jinwoo to Fight for Every Advantage

Baran earns the fifth spot because his battle against Jinwoo showed just how much the future Shadow Monarch still had to learn. The important detail is that the Baran encountered inside the Demon Castle wasn’t the original Monarch of White Flames. The real Baran had already been killed by Ashborn centuries earlier. The version Jinwoo fought was a recreation created by Kandiaru.
Even as a replica, Baran was an enormous obstacle.
By this point, Jinwoo had already cleared 99 floors of the Demon Castle and built a formidable Shadow Army, yet Baran’s physical strength was enough to push him into a serious fight. Jinwoo ultimately adapted and defeated him, but the battle demonstrated that simply having a growing army of shadows wasn’t enough to guarantee an easy victory.
Baran doesn’t rank higher because the opponent Jinwoo fought wasn’t the original Monarch. Still, his battle remains an important milestone in Jinwoo’s progression from an exceptionally strong Hunter into something far more dangerous.
4. Beru Tested How Far Jinwoo Had Come

Beru is an interesting choice because, unlike several names above him, he never truly came close to defeating Jinwoo.
The Ant King was nevertheless one of the clearest demonstrations of Jinwoo’s transformation.
Before encountering Jinwoo, Beru had already established himself as a nightmare during the Jeju Island raid. His speed, strength, intelligence, regeneration, poison and healing abilities made him one of the most dangerous creatures the Hunters had encountered. He had also devastated powerful S-Rank Hunters, including Japan’s Goto Ryuji.
When Beru finally faced Jinwoo, the battle became a brutal clash of speed and physical power. The two exchanged blows at an incredible pace, showing just how formidable the Ant King had become.
But Jinwoo had already reached another level.
Instead of needing an elaborate strategy to survive, Jinwoo was able to counter Beru’s abilities and eventually defeat him. That’s why Beru sits at No. 4. He was terrifying enough to demonstrate how much Jinwoo had grown, but he wasn’t powerful enough to push the protagonist to the same desperate point as the Monarchs.
3. Sillad Helped Push Jinwoo Toward His Breaking Point

Sillad, the Frost Monarch, deserves a place near the top because his threat wasn’t limited to a one-on-one confrontation.
His involvement became especially important after the death of Go Gunhee, one of the strongest Hunters in the series. Jinwoo eventually confronted Sillad, who used his ice-based abilities to separate Jinwoo from the battlefield and escape through a portal.
The danger increased when Sillad joined forces with Rakan and Querehsha.
The three Monarchs attacked Jinwoo together, creating a situation where even his extraordinary abilities were being stretched to their limits. After Querehsha was killed, Sillad continued to pressure Jinwoo and helped keep him occupied while Rakan looked for an opening.
That opening eventually changed everything.
Ashborn’s intervention and Jinwoo’s inheritance of his complete power completely altered the balance of the battle. Once Jinwoo had fully awakened as the Shadow Monarch, Sillad was no longer capable of competing with him. Jinwoo destroyed his trident with one hand and killed him with ease.
Sillad therefore represents a fascinating stage in Jinwoo’s evolution. He was a genuine threat before Jinwoo reached his final form, but once the Shadow Monarch’s complete power was unlocked, that gap became enormous.
2. Rakan Actually Managed to Kill Jinwoo

Rakan, the Beast Monarch and Monarch of Fangs, takes the second spot because he accomplished something extremely few enemies ever did: he killed Sung Jinwoo.
The circumstances are crucial.
During the Monarchs’ attack on Seoul, Rakan fought Jinwoo alongside Sillad and Querehsha. At this point, Jinwoo had not yet inherited Ashborn’s complete power, leaving him vulnerable to the combined strength of the Monarchs.
After Querehsha was defeated, Rakan found his opportunity.
While Jinwoo was distracted, Rakan attacked and drove his claws through Jinwoo’s chest, apparently killing him. This wasn’t simply a moment where Jinwoo came close to losing. His death triggered Ashborn’s final intervention and ultimately led to Jinwoo becoming the complete Shadow Monarch.
That makes Rakan one of the most consequential enemies in Jinwoo’s entire journey.
The irony is that the version of Jinwoo Rakan managed to kill was nowhere near the finished Shadow Monarch. Once Jinwoo completed his awakening, the difference in power became obvious. Rakan eventually tried to flee, but Jinwoo hunted him down and killed him in just four strikes.
Rakan ranks below Antares for one major reason: he could defeat an incomplete Jinwoo, but he had no real answer for the fully awakened Shadow Monarch.
1. Antares Was the Ultimate Challenge for Jinwoo

Antares sits comfortably at No. 1 because his battle with Jinwoo was on an entirely different scale.
As the Monarch of Destruction and King of Dragons, Antares was the strongest of the Monarchs. Even after Jinwoo had reached his full Shadow Monarch potential, Antares wasn’t an opponent he could simply overwhelm through brute force.
Their confrontation was essentially a collision between two apocalyptic powers.
Jinwoo had to rely on strategy rather than simply throwing everything he had at Antares. The battle involved manipulating the battlefield and creating an opportunity for the Rulers to intervene.
Jinwoo eventually managed to wound Antares with his father’s dagger, but the Rulers ultimately delivered the killing blow in the original timeline. That’s an important distinction when discussing Jinwoo’s greatest victories: defeating Antares wasn’t a straightforward solo victory.
The later timeline provides an even clearer measure of Jinwoo’s growth. After the timeline was reset, Jinwoo eventually defeated Antares himself, showing just how dramatically his power had evolved.
For that reason, Antares isn’t merely the strongest villain Jinwoo fought. He’s the enemy who best represents the absolute ceiling Jinwoo had to reach before he could stand alone at the top of the Solo Leveling power hierarchy.
Why These Villains Were Jinwoo’s Biggest Challenges
What makes this ranking different from a simple strongest Solo Leveling villains list is the emphasis on how each enemy affected Jinwoo’s journey.
Baran tested Jinwoo while he was still developing. Beru demonstrated how dramatically Jinwoo had surpassed the Hunters around him. Sillad and Rakan pushed him into a battle where his incomplete Shadow Monarch power wasn’t enough to guarantee survival.
Antares represented the final test.
Together, these battles show that Jinwoo’s transformation wasn’t simply about gaining increasingly powerful abilities. He repeatedly encountered enemies who forced him to understand the limits of those abilities and, eventually, move beyond them.
Who Is the Strongest Villain Jinwoo Fought?
Antares is the strongest villain Sung Jinwoo faced in Solo Leveling. The Monarch of Destruction represented the greatest direct threat to Jinwoo even after his transformation into the Shadow Monarch.
Rakan is arguably the most dangerous opponent in terms of what he actually accomplished against Jinwoo, since he killed Jinwoo before his complete awakening. But Antares remains the ultimate benchmark because Jinwoo needed the combined circumstances of his strategy, the Rulers’ intervention and his later evolution to overcome him.
Final Ranking
- Antares — The strongest Monarch and Jinwoo’s ultimate opponent.
- Rakan — The Beast Monarch who actually killed an incomplete Jinwoo.
- Sillad — A powerful Frost Monarch who helped overwhelm Jinwoo alongside the other Monarchs.
- Beru — The terrifying Ant King who demonstrated just how far Jinwoo had surpassed the Hunters.
- Baran — The recreated Demon King who forced Jinwoo into a difficult battle inside the Demon Castle.
The most interesting part of these encounters isn’t simply who won. It’s how each fight marks another stage in Jinwoo’s transformation. By the time he reaches Antares, the character who once struggled simply to survive has become powerful enough to stand against the greatest threat in the series.
And that’s what makes the progression of Solo Leveling so satisfying: every major enemy gives Jinwoo another reason to become stronger, until eventually there are very few opponents left capable of making him fight for his life.
