Chinese dramas have become much easier to discover outside China, but there is still something particularly satisfying about finding a C-drama that began life as a novel. A strong source story gives writers plenty to work with, from complicated characters and sprawling fantasy worlds to slow-burn romances and political conspiracies.
That is especially true with some of the best Chinese dramas based on novels. Nirvana in Fire turns a revenge story into an intricate historical political thriller, Love O2O transforms a popular romance novel into a breezy campus drama, while The Untamed and Word of Honor bring beloved danmei stories to live action through relationships shaped by the restrictions of Chinese television.
The list below covers different corners of the C-drama world, including Chinese historical dramas, xianxia fantasy, wuxia, modern romance and danmei adaptations. The order is editorial rather than an objective ranking, with storytelling, character development, adaptation value and lasting audience appeal taken into account.
What makes a novel adaptation worth watching?
A Chinese drama does not have to reproduce every page of its source novel to be a good adaptation. In fact, some of the strongest C-dramas make substantial changes when moving from prose to television.
The important question is whether the drama preserves what made the original story compelling while taking advantage of what live action can do differently. Performances, production design, costumes, music and cinematography can all add dimensions that readers only imagined while reading.
That is why this list includes adaptations that approach their source material in very different ways. Some stay relatively close to their novels, while others reshape characters and relationships for television.
1. Nirvana in Fire
Release year: 2015
Episodes: 54
Starring: Hu Ge, Liu Tao, Wang Kai
Genres: Historical, political thriller, revenge
If you are looking for a C-drama that proves Chinese television can handle sophisticated political storytelling, Nirvana in Fire is an obvious place to start.
Adapted from Hai Yan’s novel Lang Ya Bang, the drama follows Lin Shu, the surviving member of a military family destroyed by a political conspiracy. Twelve years after the massacre that claimed his family and thousands of soldiers, Lin Shu returns under a new identity and quietly begins dismantling the forces responsible.
The appeal of Nirvana in Fire is not simply its revenge premise. The drama takes its time building alliances, rivalries and political manoeuvring, allowing seemingly minor decisions to become important later. Lin Shu’s greatest weapon is often not physical strength but his ability to understand the people around him.
That makes the series particularly rewarding for viewers who enjoy Chinese historical dramas with intricate plots rather than romance alone. Hu Ge’s performance anchors the story, while the supporting cast gives the political world enough depth to make its conflicts believable.
For viewers new to C-dramas, it may require more concentration than a straightforward romance, but it is one of the adaptations that shows just how ambitious the genre can be.
2. The Untamed
Release year: 2019
Episodes: 50
Starring: Xiao Zhan, Wang Yibo
Genres: Wuxia, fantasy, mystery
Few modern Chinese dramas have created a global fanbase quite like The Untamed. Based on Mo Xiang Tong Xiu’s danmei novel Mo Dao Zu Shi, the series combines cultivation fantasy, mystery, family conflict and a deeply important relationship between Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji.
Wei Wuxian is a gifted but unconventional cultivator whose choices eventually lead to tragedy. Sixteen years after his death, he returns to the world and reunites with Lan Wangji. Together, they begin investigating mysteries connected to their past while uncovering secrets that powerful families would rather keep buried.
The live-action adaptation necessarily handles the central relationship differently from the source novel because of China’s restrictions around same-sex romance. The drama therefore places greater emphasis on loyalty, trust, companionship and the emotional bond between its two leads.
That change does not remove the emotional core of the story. Xiao Zhan and Wang Yibo’s performances helped make Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji one of the most recognizable C-drama pairings internationally.
If your idea of a Chinese drama recommendation is something with fantasy, mystery, action and an emotional relationship at its centre, The Untamed remains an essential watch.
3. Ashes of Love
Release year: 2018
Episodes: 63
Starring: Yang Zi, Deng Lun
Genre: Xianxia fantasy romance
For viewers who want romance mixed with gods, immortals, reincarnation and supernatural drama, Ashes of Love is one of the defining xianxia dramas based on a novel.
The series is adapted from Dian Xian’s novel Heavy Sweetness, Ash-like Frost. At its centre is Jin Mi, a flower fairy whose father protects her from romantic feelings because of a prophecy surrounding her future. Her life changes when she becomes involved with two powerful figures, leading to a complicated romantic triangle.
The fantasy setting gives Ashes of Love plenty of room for elaborate costumes, heavenly realms and supernatural conflicts, but the emotional story remains its biggest selling point.
Yang Zi carries much of the drama’s emotional progression as Jin Mi grows from an innocent character who barely understands love into someone forced to confront the consequences of her choices.
It is also a useful entry point for viewers trying to understand why Chinese fantasy romance dramas have such a dedicated international audience. The combination of romance, mythology and melodrama is very different from the typical modern K-drama format.
4. Love O2O
Release year: 2016
Episodes: 30
Starring: Yang Yang, Zheng Shuang
Genres: Romance, campus, gaming
Not every great Chinese novel adaptation needs palace intrigue or supernatural mythology. Love O2O goes in the opposite direction with a much lighter romantic story built around university life and online gaming.
Adapted from Gu Man’s novel of the same name, the drama follows computer science student Bei Wei Wei and Xiao Nai, one of the most popular students on campus. Their relationship begins through an online multiplayer game before gradually moving into their real lives.
The premise feels particularly relevant to the modern C-drama boom because Love O2O understands how online spaces can become part of everyday relationships. Gaming is not simply a gimmick surrounding the romance; it is the mechanism that brings the two leads together.
Yang Yang’s Xiao Nai also helped establish the actor as a major name among international C-drama audiences.
If you have mostly watched intense historical romances and want a softer Chinese romance drama, Love O2O is an easy change of pace.
5. The Princess Weiyoung
Release year: 2016
Episodes: 54
Starring: Tiffany Tang, Luo Jin, Vanness Wu
Genres: Historical, romance, revenge
The Princess Weiyoung combines several ingredients that frequently attract fans to Chinese historical romance dramas: political intrigue, revenge, identity changes and a romance developing in the middle of a dangerous court environment.
The drama is adapted from Qin Jian’s novel The Poisonous Daughter. Tiffany Tang plays Feng Xin’er, a princess whose kingdom is destroyed and whose identity becomes central to her survival. After assuming the identity of Li Weiyoung, she enters a world where she must use intelligence and strategy to survive while pursuing revenge.
The identity-switch premise gives the drama an immediate hook, but its appeal comes from watching the protagonist adapt to an environment where trust is difficult to find.
It is also the sort of C-drama that works well for viewers who enjoy stories in which romance exists alongside a larger revenge plot. The relationship is important, but the protagonist has ambitions and enemies outside the central love story.
6. You Are My Glory
Release year: 2021
Episodes: 32
Starring: Yang Yang, Dilraba Dilmurat
Genres: Modern romance, gaming, drama
If Love O2O interests you but you would prefer an older, more mature romance, You Are My Glory is a natural next stop.
The drama is based on another Gu Man novel and reunites Yang Yang with a story that once again incorporates gaming, although its characters are in a very different stage of life.
Qiao Jingjing is a successful actress who secretly struggles with her gaming skills, while Yu Tu is an old acquaintance who has taken a very different professional path. Their lives intersect again through the game, gradually reopening a relationship that had been left unresolved.
What separates You Are My Glory from many campus romances is its focus on adulthood. Career choices, personal ambitions and the realities of work all become part of the romance.
The gaming element is still important, but the drama uses it more as a way to connect the characters than as the entire premise. For fans looking for modern Chinese romance dramas based on novels, it is one of the more accessible choices.
7. Word of Honor
Release year: 2021
Episodes: 36 plus special
Starring: Zhang Zhehan, Gong Jun
Genres: Wuxia, mystery, action
Word of Honor is another major C-drama adaptation of a danmei novel, this time Priest’s Faraway Wanderers.
Zhou Zishu leaves behind his life as the leader of an assassin organization and enters the martial arts world hoping to live out his remaining years in relative peace. His plans change when he meets Wen Kexing, a mysterious figure with his own connection to the violent history surrounding them.
The story gradually expands into a larger mystery involving martial arts factions, hidden identities and old grudges.
Like The Untamed, the drama presents the central relationship through the lens of intense companionship rather than explicit romance. That dynamic became a major part of its appeal, particularly among international viewers who discovered the series through streaming and fan communities.
The shorter episode count compared with many sprawling historical C-dramas also makes Word of Honor a relatively manageable choice if you want to explore wuxia Chinese dramas without committing to an extremely long series.
8. Cruel Romance
Release year: 2015
Episodes: 40
Starring: Huang Xiaoming, Joe Chen
Genres: Republican-era romance, action, suspense
For something darker and more melodramatic, Cruel Romance moves away from immortal realms and cultivation worlds and into 1930s Shanghai.
Adapted from Yi Nian’s novel Fate of Jinxiu, the story follows Rong Jinxiu, a young woman who travels to Shanghai after her family is killed. Her search for answers brings her into the dangerous world of Zuo Zhen, a powerful triad leader.
The setting immediately gives the drama a different identity from traditional palace-set historical series. Shanghai’s criminal underworld becomes part of the story, while the central romance develops alongside questions of revenge, loyalty and survival.
The result is a combination of Chinese historical romance, action and suspense rather than a purely romantic drama. Viewers who enjoy period settings but want something more modern in its pacing may find it an interesting alternative to palace dramas.
Which Chinese drama based on a novel should you watch first?
The answer depends heavily on what you want from a C-drama.
If political intrigue is your priority, start with Nirvana in Fire. For fantasy and a powerful central relationship, The Untamed is the obvious choice. Ashes of Love is built for viewers who want xianxia romance, while Love O2O and You Are My Glory offer more contemporary stories.
Fans of revenge and palace intrigue can try The Princess Weiyoung, while Word of Honor delivers wuxia action and mystery. If you want a darker period romance with an unusual setting, Cruel Romance rounds out the list.
The biggest advantage of exploring Chinese dramas based on novels is the variety. A single category can take you from university gaming and modern romance to ancient kingdoms, immortal gods and martial-arts conspiracies.
Where can you watch Chinese dramas?
Streaming availability for C-dramas varies by country and can change over time, so it is better to check the title on the platform available in your region rather than relying on an old watchlist.
Netflix carries a selection of Chinese dramas in some markets, while platforms such as Viki, WeTV and other regional services also distribute C-dramas. A drama’s availability in India, the United States or another market may not be identical.
If Netflix is your preferred platform, Fandomora’s existing Netflix streaming and TV guides can be a useful related resource when deciding what to watch next.
Why are so many Chinese dramas adapted from novels?
Chinese web fiction has developed an enormous ecosystem of stories across romance, fantasy, wuxia, historical fiction and danmei. Successful novels can arrive with established readerships and recognizable characters, giving television producers source material with an existing audience.
The adaptation process can still be complicated. Screenwriters may need to shorten long storylines, combine characters, change relationships or remove material that cannot be shown under broadcast regulations.
That is particularly noticeable with danmei adaptations such as The Untamed and Word of Honor. Their source material has explicit romantic elements, while the television versions focus on emotionally intense bonds that fit the restrictions surrounding Chinese live-action productions.
For viewers, that difference can actually make comparing the novel and drama an interesting part of the experience.
More C-drama recommendations to add to your watchlist
If you are coming to Chinese television after watching Korean dramas, it is worth remembering that C-dramas operate across a much broader range of formats. A modern romance such as You Are My Glory has little in common structurally with a sprawling xianxia epic such as Ashes of Love.
That variety is part of the fun.
For readers exploring Asian television more broadly, Fandomora’s guide to why Korean dramas are so popular provides useful context for the wider K-drama audience, while the site’s best romantic K-dramas guide is another natural stop if you are moving between Korean and Chinese romance series.
And if you are interested in actors across Asian television, Fandomora’s top Korean actors and actresses guide provides another related entertainment read.
The world of C-dramas is far too large to fit into eight recommendations, but these novel adaptations offer a useful starting point. Once you find the subgenre that works for you—whether that is historical romance, wuxia, xianxia, gaming romance or mystery—the next watch is usually much easier to find.
