K-dramas have produced generations of actresses who became much more than familiar faces on television. Some helped define the first wave of Hallyu across Asia, while others became global streaming stars through Netflix and other international platforms. From Winter Sonata and Jewel in the Palace to Crash Landing on You, Goblin, My Mister, and The Glory, these actresses have repeatedly found roles that audiences remember long after a drama ends.
But who are the most famous K-drama actresses of all time?
That question is harder to answer than it might seem. Fame can come from television ratings, longevity, international popularity, iconic characters, awards, cultural influence, or simply having a filmography packed with dramas that became part of the K-drama conversation. A veteran such as Kim Hye-ja has a different kind of fame from a global streaming star such as Song Hye-kyo, while an actress such as IU has expanded her influence from K-pop into television and film.
For this Fandomora ranking, the focus is on the overall footprint of each actress: career longevity, iconic K-dramas, cultural impact, domestic recognition and international visibility. The order is therefore editorial rather than an objective measurement of acting ability.
With that in mind, here are the 10 most famous K-drama actresses of all time, ranked.
10. IU
IU, whose real name is Lee Ji-eun, represents a newer generation of Korean stars who successfully crossed from music into acting without being defined solely by their idol background.
Her early television work included Dream High, but My Mister became an important turning point in establishing her as a serious actress. Her performance as Lee Ji-an showed a much quieter and more emotionally restrained side of her abilities than her earlier projects. She followed that success with Hotel del Luna, where she played the glamorous but emotionally wounded Jang Man-wol.
IU’s television career has continued to expand. Her role in Netflix’s When Life Gives You Tangerines gave her another demanding performance, playing Ae-sun in a story that spans decades and explores love, family, hardship and resilience. Netflix describes the series as a sweeping romance saga set partly on Jeju Island, while the drama received four honors at the 61st Baeksang Arts Awards.
What makes IU especially notable among famous Korean actresses is the breadth of her popularity. She already had an enormous audience as a singer before becoming an established television performer, allowing her acting career to reach viewers who may not have discovered her through K-dramas alone.
Must-watch K-dramas: My Mister, Hotel del Luna, When Life Gives You Tangerines, Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo
9. Jun Ji-hyun
Jun Ji-hyun has one of the most recognizable screen personas in Korean entertainment. While her fame extends well beyond television, her K-drama work has produced some of the most memorable female characters of the modern Hallyu era.
Her role as Cheon Song-yi in My Love from the Star remains one of the defining performances of the 2010s K-drama boom. The character was a famous actress within the story, and Jun Ji-hyun’s comic timing, confidence and emotional shifts made the role particularly memorable.
She followed it with The Legend of the Blue Sea, playing a mermaid opposite Lee Min-ho. The series reunited her with writer Park Ji-eun, who had also written My Love from the Star.
Jun Ji-hyun also demonstrated a different side of her range in the Kingdom universe with Kingdom: Ashin of the North. Her career illustrates why fame in Korean entertainment cannot always be measured by the number of dramas an actress makes. Jun has often appeared selectively, but the projects themselves have tended to attract considerable attention.
For international viewers, her popularity also connects K-dramas with Korean cinema. Her film career, particularly My Sassy Girl and The Thieves, helped establish her as a major Korean entertainment star long before streaming platforms brought K-dramas to an even larger global audience.
Must-watch K-dramas: My Love from the Star, The Legend of the Blue Sea, Kingdom: Ashin of the North, Jirisan
8. Choi Ji-woo
Before Netflix became a major force in global Korean entertainment, Choi Ji-woo was already one of the actresses associated with the original Hallyu explosion.
Her most important international role came in Winter Sonata, the 2002 drama that became particularly influential in Japan and other Asian markets. Soompi’s retrospective on memorable K-dramas identifies Winter Sonata as one of the early Hallyu dramas and notes its explosive success in Japan.
Choi Ji-woo followed that success with Stairway to Heaven, another early-2000s melodrama that became widely recognized among international K-drama audiences. Her work during this period helped establish the emotional, romance-driven style that many viewers came to associate with classic Korean television dramas.
Her influence is particularly important when discussing the most famous K-drama actresses of all time because modern K-drama popularity did not begin with Netflix. Choi Ji-woo was already an international Korean drama star during an earlier stage of the Korean Wave.
She later appeared in projects including Twenty Again and made a memorable cameo in Crash Landing on You, connecting two different eras of K-drama fandom.
Must-watch K-dramas: Winter Sonata, Stairway to Heaven, Beautiful Days, Twenty Again
7. Lee Young-ae
Lee Young-ae’s place on this list is largely connected to one extraordinary cultural phenomenon: Jewel in the Palace.
The 2003–2004 historical drama, also known as Dae Jang Geum, became a major part of the early Korean Wave. Korea.net describes the series as a cultural phenomenon across Asia that played a pivotal role in the early expansion of Hallyu. It introduced international audiences to elements of Korean traditional culture, royal cuisine and medicine, while Lee Young-ae became a major star through her portrayal of Jang Geum.
The scale of the show’s impact goes beyond television ratings. Korea.net reports that the drama reached a peak domestic viewership rating of 57 percent and contributed to the international distribution of Korean dramas. Its popularity also influenced tourism and interest in Korean food and culture.
That gives Lee Young-ae a different kind of importance from actresses whose fame primarily comes from contemporary streaming hits.
She has also appeared in films such as Joint Security Area, Sympathy for Lady Vengeance and The Lady from the Lake, while returning to television in projects including Saimdang, Memoir of Colors, Inspector Koo and Maestra: Strings of Truth.
When discussing famous Korean actresses, it is difficult to ignore an actress whose most iconic television character became one of the best-known faces of the early Korean Wave.
Must-watch K-dramas: Jewel in the Palace, Saimdang, Memoir of Colors, Inspector Koo, Maestra: Strings of Truth
6. Kim Hye-soo
Kim Hye-soo represents longevity and versatility in a way few contemporary actresses can match.
Her career stretches across multiple generations of Korean entertainment, and she has repeatedly moved between genres rather than becoming associated with one particular type of role. Her television work includes Signal, Hyena, Juvenile Justice and The Queen’s Umbrella.
Signal remains particularly important to her modern television legacy. Instead of relying on a conventional romance-focused heroine, Kim Hye-soo played a determined detective in a crime story involving cases connected across different periods.
She later took on the role of Queen Im Hwa-ryung in The Queen’s Umbrella. Soompi described the character as a queen and mother who must protect her sons while navigating the political pressures of the Joseon royal court.
That ability to move from crime thrillers to historical dramas while maintaining a strong screen presence explains much of Kim Hye-soo’s staying power.
Her career also demonstrates why the phrase best K-drama actresses cannot be reduced to romance stars. Korean television has a long tradition of actresses carrying crime dramas, political stories, family dramas and social narratives, and Kim Hye-soo has been one of the most visible examples.
Must-watch K-dramas: Signal, Hyena, Juvenile Justice, The Queen’s Umbrella
5. Kim Go-eun
Kim Go-eun belongs to the generation that helped bridge Korean television’s traditional star system with the newer global streaming era.
She first attracted major attention through the film A Muse before moving into television with projects such as Cheese in the Trap. But Guardian: The Lonely and Great God, better known internationally as Goblin, turned her into a major K-drama name.
Her performance as Ji Eun-tak opposite Gong Yoo gave her enormous international visibility. The drama itself became one of the defining fantasy romances of its period, and Kim Go-eun’s ability to move between youthful comedy and heavier emotional material became a major part of the show’s appeal.
Her later work has demonstrated that she is not dependent on one particular character type. She appeared in The King: Eternal Monarch, Yumi’s Cells, Little Women and other projects that pushed her into different genres and tones.
That range matters when considering the most famous K-drama actresses because longevity increasingly depends on being able to reinvent one’s screen identity rather than repeatedly playing the same romantic archetype.
Must-watch K-dramas: Goblin, Yumi’s Cells, Little Women, Cheese in the Trap
4. Son Ye-jin
Son Ye-jin’s career has combined melodrama, romance, comedy and more serious dramatic roles, making her one of the most recognizable Korean actresses both domestically and internationally.
She established herself during the early 2000s through projects including Summer Scent and later Alone in Love, while her film career included The Classic and A Moment to Remember. Her reputation was therefore already well established before the streaming era.
Then came Something in the Rain and, more significantly for her international profile, Crash Landing on You.
As Yoon Se-ri, Son Ye-jin played a wealthy South Korean businesswoman who accidentally lands in North Korea and becomes involved with Hyun Bin’s character, Ri Jeong-hyeok. The series became one of the signature international K-dramas of its period. Soompi’s behind-the-scenes coverage of the drama reflects the scale of attention surrounding the show’s central performances.
Thirty-Nine later showed another side of her screen presence through a more mature story centered on friendship, relationships and mortality.
Son Ye-jin’s importance to K-drama history comes from the fact that her international breakthrough was not the beginning of her career. She was already a major Korean actress when Crash Landing on You introduced her to another enormous global audience.
Must-watch K-dramas: Crash Landing on You, Something in the Rain, Thirty-Nine, Personal Taste
3. Gong Hyo-jin
Gong Hyo-jin has built a career around something that is surprisingly difficult to sustain: consistently memorable television performances without relying on a single iconic character.
Her major dramas include Sang Doo! Let’s Go to School, Thank You, Pasta, The Greatest Love, Master’s Sun, It’s Okay, That’s Love, The Producers, Don’t Dare to Dream and When the Camellia Blooms. Her film work has also added another dimension to her career.
She became particularly associated with romantic comedies, but reducing her career to that label misses the reason she has remained relevant for so long. Her performances often work because her characters feel imperfect and recognizably human rather than designed solely as idealized romantic leads.
When the Camellia Blooms was especially important because it combined romance with family drama, community relationships and a murder mystery. Gong Hyo-jin’s performance also helped reinforce her reputation as one of Korea’s most dependable television leads.
Her long list of successful dramas makes her one of the strongest examples of a famous K-drama actress whose reputation was built gradually through repeated audience connections rather than one international breakout.
Must-watch K-dramas: When the Camellia Blooms, Master’s Sun, The Greatest Love, It’s Okay, That’s Love
2. Kim Hye-ja
Kim Hye-ja’s fame comes from a different generation and a different definition of television stardom.
She began working in Korean television decades before the current global K-drama boom and accumulated an enormous body of work. Her reputation in Korea is closely associated with powerful family dramas and emotionally demanding performances.
International audiences may know her particularly well from Bong Joon-ho’s Mother, but her television legacy is much broader. She appeared in productions such as Dear My Friends and The Light in Your Eyes, the latter earning her the Baeksang Arts Award for Best Actress in Television in 2019.
Her importance becomes clearer when the history of Korean television is viewed across generations. Kim Hye-ja was already an established household name long before Korean dramas became a major streaming export.
That longevity makes her difficult to compare directly with younger stars. Someone such as IU may have enormous contemporary global visibility, while Kim Hye-ja represents decades of domestic television recognition and artistic influence.
For that reason, she belongs near the top of any serious conversation about the most famous Korean actresses of all time.
Must-watch K-dramas: The Light in Your Eyes, Dear My Friends, Our Blues, Country Princess
1. Song Hye-kyo
Song Hye-kyo has perhaps the clearest combination of longevity, landmark K-dramas and international recognition among the actresses on this list.
She became a major television star through Autumn in My Heart, All In and Full House, establishing herself during the period when Korean dramas were beginning to spread widely throughout Asia. Her later role in That Winter, the Wind Blows further reinforced her reputation.
Then came Descendants of the Sun.
The 2016 drama became one of the defining Hallyu hits of its generation, with Song Hye-kyo playing Dr. Kang Mo-yeon opposite Song Joong-ki. The drama’s success made both leads internationally recognizable and helped reinforce the global appetite for Korean romance dramas.
But Song Hye-kyo did not remain locked into the romantic-drama image that made her famous.
In The Glory, she played Moon Dong-eun, a woman pursuing revenge against people connected to the abuse she suffered during her school years. The role was dramatically different from her earlier romantic leads and introduced her to a new generation of global Netflix viewers.
Her filmography therefore covers several distinct eras of K-drama history: the early Hallyu period, the pan-Asian romance boom, the international streaming era and the darker prestige-drama movement.
Her major television credits include Autumn in My Heart, Full House, Descendants of the Sun, Encounter and The Glory.
That combination of career length and recognizable dramas is why Song Hye-kyo takes the top position in this editorial ranking. It is not a claim that she is objectively the greatest actress; rather, her overall fame and K-drama footprint are unusually broad across multiple eras.
Must-watch K-dramas: Autumn in My Heart, Full House, Descendants of the Sun, The Glory
Why These Actresses Remain So Famous
The biggest common factor connecting these actresses is not one particular acting style. It is their ability to become attached to dramas that audiences remember.
Choi Ji-woo represents the early Hallyu generation. Lee Young-ae helped turn Jewel in the Palace into a vehicle for Korean cultural visibility overseas. Kim Hye-ja represents decades of domestic television history, while Song Hye-kyo and Son Ye-jin became major faces of the international romance-drama boom.
Jun Ji-hyun built an unusually recognizable star persona across film and television. Kim Hye-soo demonstrated how long-term television success can coexist with genre experimentation. Gong Hyo-jin established herself through repeated successful dramas rather than a single phenomenon. Kim Go-eun became one of the defining faces of the modern fantasy and prestige-drama era, while IU demonstrates how the boundaries between K-pop stardom and K-drama fame have become increasingly blurred.
And that is ultimately what makes ranking the most famous K-drama actresses of all time so difficult. Korean entertainment has changed dramatically over the past three decades, and fame in one era does not always look the same as fame in another.
Who Is the Most Famous K-Drama Actress of All Time?
There is no universally accepted answer because “famous” can mean several different things. If the measurement is international streaming visibility, younger stars can compete with veterans who dominated Korean television decades earlier. If the measurement is longevity and domestic cultural influence, veteran actresses become much more prominent.
This ranking therefore considers the wider picture: landmark dramas, career longevity, Hallyu influence, recognizable characters and international visibility.
That broader approach is what places Song Hye-kyo, Kim Hye-ja, Gong Hyo-jin, Son Ye-jin and Kim Go-eun near the top while still giving major recognition to legends such as Lee Young-ae and Choi Ji-woo.

Final Thoughts
The history of K-drama is also a history of its actresses.
From Choi Ji-woo carrying the emotional weight of Winter Sonata during the early Hallyu era to Lee Young-ae becoming synonymous with Jewel in the Palace, from Kim Hye-ja’s decades of television work to Song Hye-kyo’s transition from classic romance dramas to The Glory, each generation has produced stars who changed what a Korean television actress could represent.
The newest generation has expanded that definition even further. IU demonstrates the power of crossover stardom, while Kim Go-eun represents the rise of actresses who can move comfortably between film, fantasy, romance and prestige television.
Ultimately, the most famous K-drama actresses are not famous for exactly the same reasons. Some built their reputations over decades, some became international Hallyu icons, and others found a new audience through global streaming.
That variety is precisely what makes Korean drama history so fascinating—and why this list will almost certainly continue to change as the next generation of actresses creates its own unforgettable characters.
